전 세계 물류, 원자재 업계 등이 비상에 걸렸다.

해운 물류의 대동맥이자 세계의 무역로인 수에즈 운하(Suez Canal)가 지난 23일부터 대형 컨테이너 선박에 가로막혀 마비됐기 때문이다.
길이 400m, 너비 59m 규모로, 프랑스 파리의 에펠탑보다 높고 긴, 미국 엠파이어스테이트 빌딩 크기의

2만2000TEU(1TEU=20피트 컨테이너 1개)급 초대형 메가 컨테이너 화물선박 ‘에버기븐(EverGiven)호’가

수로를 가로지른 상태에서 좌초돼 수에르 운하의 항로가 막혔다.

 

수에즈 운하는 아시아와 아프리카 두 대륙의 경계인 이집트의 시나니반도 서쪽에 건설된 세계 최대의 운하로,

지중해의 포스사이드(Port Said) 항구와 홍해의 수에즈 항구를 연결하고 있다.

수에즈 운하 (Suez Canal)는 Strait of Hormuz, Abqaiq Oil Processing Facility, Strait of Malacca, Druzhba Pipeline 과 함께 The big 5 Chock points에 해당한다.

choke point는 물자수송이나 군사작전등에서 전략상 중요한 의미를 갖는 주요 길목을 말한다. 특히 해상의 요충지를 가리키는 경우가 많다. 대형상선,군함등이 반드시 지나가야 하는 지점(해협,운하등)이 이에 해당한다.

 

아프리카 대륙을 우회하지 않고 곧바로 아시아와 유럽이 연결되는 통로로, 세계 물류산업에 중요한 역할을 한다.

운하의 총 길이 195km, 수심 20m로 70만 톤(t) 유조선의 통행도 가능하다. 지난해 한 해 동안 수에즈 운하를 통과한 선박은 1만9000대에 달했고, 하루 50척 이상의 선박이 통과한 것으로 집계됐다.

에버기븐호는 지난 23일(현지시간) 오전 7시경 홍해를 지나 북쪽으로 수에즈 운하를 지나나 통제력을 잃고 좌초됐다.

According to market research firm argus media 

it's a key waterway that connects Asian factories to Europe 

through the mediterranean and

from there to ports and markets on the east coast 

backed up on either side are cargo ships 

that can contain clothes, shoes, exercise equipment, electronics,

car parts, carpets, really anything you can buy in a store made in China could be on those ships

plus over 13 million barrels of crude oil 

according to estimates

adding further supply pressure on gas prices already rising

as production lags and lockdown restrictions ease sending more drivers to hit the road from Beijing to Denmark to DC

all eyes are on the rescue effort 

as diggers and tugboats have unsuccessfully tried to dislodge the massive ship

next an elite salvage team will take a crack

according to the Suez Canal Authority 

 

so they're going to try to do several things 

They'll start trying to offload water ballast, oil fuel 

but again they have to be very careful about this 

the vessel is hung up on the bags

and what you can't do is take a lot of weight off the ends

and put a lot of what they call a sagging stress on the vessel

you can conceivably crack the hull cause an oil spill 

but worse catastrophically fractured the vessel in half

 

Experts say it could take days or weeks to move the behemoth 

capable of carrying more than twenty thousand freight boxes

it's another straw on the already broken back of global trade

already struggling from pandemic impacts 

like ramped up consumer demand and decreased port capacity 

from both covid restrictions and a worker shortage 

 

every day that passes another 50 ships get held up 

or have to decide to take a 10 plus day longer route around Africa 

and the ripple effects only grow
